Victoria

Victoria was originally a part of New South Wales. There were a few attempts at starting convict settlements in the area, but none were successful. Finally in 1835, a permanent settlement was made that did not have convicts.

Victoria is named after the then Queen Victoria, and its capital city, Melbourne, was named after the then British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne.

Victoria is the smallest state on mainland Australia, but it was in Melbourne that the Commonwealth of Australia had its first federal parliament.
