Western Australia
The largest state in Australia, Western Australia occupies nearly a third of the Australian continent. The first known Europeans to arrive at the continent were Dutch sailors who landed in what is now Western Australia in the 1600s.
British settlers first arrived in 1829, but it was not until convicts arrived in 1850 that the new settlement on the Swan River, Perth, really started to succeed. Even then, the new British colony still struggled until gold was discovered in 1882.
