South Australia
Colonel William Light landed in the area that was to become Adelaide in 1836 and proclaimed the area a British colony. The new colony had trouble being independent at first, but was supporting itself by the 1840s and self-governing by 1856.
The capital, Adelaide, was named after the wife of the then British King William IV.
South Australia is famous for the quality of the wines produced in the state, particularly in the Barossa valley.
