New South Wales
New South Wales was named by Captain James Cook, who thought that it looked like South Wales in Britain. The state is the site of Captain Cook's original landing, and Australia's first permanent European settlement was in NSW at Sydney Cove.
The first European settlement in Sydney was made up mostly of convicts sent to New South Wales from Britain in 1788. By 1840, no more convicts were sent to New South Wales.
New South Wales has the biggest population of all the Australian states and its capital, Sydney, has the biggest population of all Australian cities.
