The Australian Foreign Minister, the Hon Stephen Smith, MP, in a media release has renewed calls for universal adherence to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

On 25 April every year, Australians and New Zealanders commemorate ANZAC Day. It commemorates when on 25 April 1915 troops from both countries landed at Gallipoli. For more information click here.

Minister for Trade, Simon Crean MP, has said that new figures confirm that China and Japan are Australia’s top trade partners.

Mr Crean has also welcomed the strong commitment expressed by ministers to conclude the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) negotiations at their next meeting in August in Singapore.

The Prime Minister, Hon Kevin Rudd MP, convened an Australia 2020 Summit at Parliament House on 19 and 20 April to help shape a long term strategy for Australia’s future. It brought together people from across the country to tackle the long term challenges confronting Australia’s future. Mr Rudd gave some opening remarks to participants.

The Minister for Trade, Simon Crean MP, has used the 25th anniversary of the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement to reiterate the opportunity for extending trade pacts “beyond the border” and to note the opportunity for Australia to build on the agreement’s success to date.

The Minister for Climate Change and Water, the Hon Penny Wong, has given a speech outlining Australia’s approach to addressing the challenges of climate change.

Applications are now open for the Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships 2009 academic year and close on 30 June.
